Singapore shuts schools, cautions children vulnerable to virus variants

Singapore has cautioned that the new coronavirus variants, including the one first identified in India, were affecting more children. It prepares to shut most schools from this week and is working on plans to vaccinate the young. 

All primary, secondary and junior colleges will switch to home-based learning from Wednesday until May 28, the end of the school term. Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said that some of the virus mutations appear to be much more virulent, and they seem to affect the younger children. He further stated that none of the children who have been infected are seriously ill and some have mild symptoms. Singapore reported 38 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Sunday, which is the highest daily case number since mid-September.
